Basket Stitch Intarsia Pillow

Note: uses three colors of worsted weight yarn, main color ("MC"), and two contrasting colors ("CC"), one on each side. Both sides may be done with same CC, if desired.

Using worsted weight yarn and size 7 to 9 needles...

Note: pBs -- pass yarn to back, slip the last stitch.
pys -- pass yarn to front, slip the last stitch.

Pillow Side (make 2)

Cast on 34 stitches with MC.
Row 1: Knit across, pass yarn to front, and slip the last stitch.

Pattern Rows:
Row 2: K3, (P2, K2) seven times, P3.
Row 3: K3, (P2, K2) seven times, P2, pBs.
Row 4: P3, (K2, P2) seven times, K3.
Row 5: P3, (K2, P2) seven times, K2, pys.

Rows 6-11: repeat pattern rows 2-5 once, then 2-3 once.

Note: the next several rows use intarsia to create an inner color block. If you are using two
separate balls for MC, be sure to properly twist in and out the different blocks in order to
establish a solid piece of fabric. If using one MC ball [in addition to the CC ball], be sure
to twist in the MC every few stitches in order to maintain tension.

Row 12: P3, K2, P2, K2, switch to CC. (P2, K2) four times. Switch to MC, then P2, K2, P2, K3.
Row 13: P3, K2, P2, K2, switch to CC. (P2, K2) four times. Switch to MC, then P2, K2, P2, K2, pys.
Row 14: K3, P2, K2, P3, switch to CC. (K2, P2) four times. Switch to MC, then K2, P2, K2, P3.
Row 15: K3, P2, K2, P3, switch to CC. (K2, P2) four times. Switch to MC, then K2, P2, K2, P2, pBs.

Rows 15-31: repeat pattern rows 13-16 four more times, then 12-13 once.

Rows 32-41: repeat rows 2-5 twice, then 2-3 once.
Row 42: repeat row 1.

Cast off.

Finishing

Stitch two sides together with whip stitch, using main color worsted weight yarn and crochet hook
(size G or H) or yarn needle, leaving an opening of roughly two inches. Fold inside out
(if desired; this rounds out the edges better). Stuff, then finish final seam, continuing
in whip stitch. Weave in all ends.
